Visiting ‘Other Worlds’ through time travel

Posted on: July 10, 2016, by :

Time travel. It’s a frequently visited trope in science fiction because humans are fascinated with the idea of leaping through time on a whim. But what happens if the traveler in question has no control over it?

I’ve recently been rewatching the TV show Quantum Leap (1987-1993) and watching Dr. Sam Beckett “leaping from life to life, striving to put right what once went wrong” is just as enjoyable as it was the first time around.

And yet, our hero in this tale is hoping that he will eventually end up in his own time and in his own body. Time travel in fiction is rife with this theme. A person jumps through time and spends the rest of the movie, book or series trying to get back to where they started.

PresentTenseCoverI didn’t realize it as I was writing but that’s the story I wrote for Miles, the main character of In the Present Tense. Miles finds himself traveling along his own timeline, thanks to an unusual dissociative disorder. His younger self is trying desperately to reconnect with this first love, while his present-day self is trying to stay with his wife and cure his time travel condition. But really, he just wants to go back to where he started. Sound familiar?

If you love time travel with a romantic twist and mysterious villains who keep trying to thwart the hero’s plans, In the Present Tense might be just what you’re looking for.

  1. I remember liking Quantum Leap; that was back before I realized that if I wanted to achieve my dreams I had to steal time from somewhere else in my life, and TV was that somewhere. But son of a gun, I still haven’t achieved my dreams!

  2. I loved Quantum Leap! Used to faithfully watch it. I’m going to have to see if it’s on Canadian Netflix or Crave TV so I can binge watch, too. In the Present Tense sounds really intriguing! Great to meet you as part of this hop!

    1. Fair warning: you will get sucked in and forget all other responsibilities… Or maybe that’s just me. 😉 Surprisingly, the show holds up pretty well. The special effects are obviously dated, but otherwise, it’s as good as I remember. Great to meet you too!

  3. Oh, I love Quantum Leap! And it’s a great theme that can be revisited in so many interesting ways. In the Present Tense sounds like a wonderful read, revisiting the theme but in a different way.

  4. I can remember watching Quantum Leap I loved it I used to watch all the time I think it’s been shown on The Sci Fi Channel here in the UK.

  5. I grew up with television and later on, when I had a TV, it was in Australia where a lot of shows that people grew up watching were unheard of.

So while I’ve heard of Quantum Leap, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an episode. It’s an interesting theory, though…although I suspect it was the inspiration behind THE DOLLHOUSE, which was excellent, too!

    Cheers,

    t.

  6. I love your twist on the time travel idea. Sounds really cool. And I Adored! Quantum Leap–except the ending.
